Tech Monitor: Digital Twins of Organizations are the Next Generation of Enterprise Architecture

“The sheer volume of data generated daily... could soon see the emergence of the first viable digital twin of an entire organization,” said Ed Granger, Vice President of Product Innovation at Orbus Software.

In his recent article for Tech Monitor, Ed delves into the potential of digital twins of organizations (DTOs) and why they are gaining traction now. With the integration of real-time data, digital twins of entire organizations offer a comprehensive view of operations, enabling businesses to simulate and optimize every aspect of their structure and processes.

Why is now the time for a digital twin of an organization (DTO)?

With more data at our disposal than ever before, organizations are primed to leverage these virtual replicas to improve decision-making, operational efficiency, and strategic planning. By creating a digital twin of the entire business, companies can test scenarios, streamline processes, and make data-driven improvements in real time.

Ed outlines how this innovation is interwoven with innovation in enterprise architecture. Having moved from static and potentially siloed models to real-time, personalized, and collaborative platforms, today’s enterprise architecture offerings could help to realize a DTO.

The broad use cases of a DTO

Examples of potential use cases of a DTO include:

  • Revenue driver analysis: They could correlate buying behavior and demand signals with internal operational behavior to gain clarity over critical revenue drivers.
  • Customer experience optimization: With AI in customer touchpoints, the data gathered can be pulled into a customer journey digital twin, helping organizations identify pain points and rectify the problems.

Enterprise architects and DTOs

Enterprise architects play a crucial role in deploying DTOs by articulating how and why business and technology systems are critical. As EAs already integrate data across enterprises, they’re positioned to guide the implementations of these virtual replicas and collaborate closely with stakeholders. Although DTOs are not yet mainstream, advancements in AI and machine learning will help manage the vast data volumes they require. Organizations that start integrating business and IT data now will be better prepared to leverage digital twins of entire organizations as the next generation of enterprise architecture evolves.
